What does “apostille” mean?

As of January 11, 2024, Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Hague Apostille Convention), a multilateral treaty, the main purpose of which is to facilitate the circulation of public documents (e.g., birth certificates, corporate powers of attorney, diplomas etc.) issued by one country to be used in another country.

Apostille is the process required to certify that a document has been signed by a notary public. Apostilles authenticate the seals and signatures of officials on public documents such as birth certificates, court orders and marriage certificates.

What does “authentication and legalization” mean?

Authentication and legalization are the processes required to make documents notarized in Canada valid for use outside of Canada. This is the equivalent to apostille. For more information, visit our Authentication and Legalization page.
